Hudson's Hope Arena

The Hudson’s Hope Arena is located within walking distance of down town. With its NHL size ice surface, annual Hockey tournaments and ice shows which are held throughout the winter. Minor hockey, figure skating and recreation hockey keeps the arena a nice busy place. Skate sharpening is available at the arena and a variety of skates to rent. With friendly staff and great food at the concession, it is definitely a great place to be in the winter. Click here to view their schedules and booking information!

Hudson's Hope Outdoor Pool

The Hudson’s Hope Outdoor Pool offers several different varieties of swims throughout the summer season. It is a fun relaxing setting for the whole family. Click here to view their schedules and booking information!

Jamieson Woods Nature Preserve

Jamieson Woods Nature Preserve is home to ancient sand dunes and mature mixed forest including pine and aspen. This tranquil woodland setting is home to many types of birds including, most unusually, seven species of woodpeckers.


Beryl Prairie Community Park

Thanks to a community and Council initiative this 28 acre piece of land has been set aside for the enjoyment of the residents of Beryl Prairie area.


Outdoor Education Site



School District #60 operates on outdoor education site at Cameron lake with excellent trails for both hiking and cross country skiing.

Parks

The District of Hudson’s Hope is known for its municipal parks that offer recreational and camping opportunities. We run four parks which include Cameron Lake, Dinosaur Lake, Alwin Holland Park, and King Gething Park. Click here to find out more about these campgrounds!

Education

Pre-school The Hudson’s Hope Playschool offers a preschool program for children aged 30 months to 5 years.  A variety of age-appropriate and theme related activities are incorporated into each Playschool day to help children in all areas of development.  Classes run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (September – June).  Drop-in care is also available.  Please call Karen Kehl @ 250-783-5290 for more information.

StrongStart - The Hudson's Hope StrongStart is located at the Hudson's Hope School and is a free, drop-in early learning program for children ages 0-5 and their parent/cargiver. There is a qualified Early Childhood Educator on-site. They provide healthy snacks each day. This is a safe, creative environment to stimulate learning and literacy through play. There are also opportunities for library time and use of the gymnasium. A STRONG START FOR A LIFETIME OF LEARNING!

Hudson’s Hope School — An educational facility where the teachers all know their students and are willing to devote their time and energy to ensure that students are successful. Students rise to the level of expectations and the large majority go on to university or technological institutes. All students are encouraged to join local extracurricular teams—basketball, volleyball, soccer, etc.—and be rewarded with the feeling of success. Health Services

Hudson’s Hope has an excellent small-town health facility, which offers:

  • Visiting Dietician

The Clinic is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Currently there are five visiting doctors on rotation, offering services to patients four days a week.

After hours, patients are urged to call the nurse help line at 1-866-215-4700, to determine whether or not they require a doctor.

Social Housing

Silver Willow Court - ten unit social housing complex for seniors and mentally or physically challenged citizens.  The facility is all encompassing, complete with laundry facilities, lounge, basement recreation room, and private entrances.

9 1 1 Service

Hudson’s Hope uses 9-1-1 to contact Police, Fire and Ambulance. Calls to 9-1-1 are answered in Prince George and then forwarded to the appropriate emergency service dispatch. The RCMP are dispatched from Prince George, the Fire & Rescue Service are dispatched from Fort St John, and the Ambulance is dispatched from Kamloops. Make sure that your address is posted by your phone as well as being visible from your driveway.

Fire Protection

The District is protected by the Hudson's Hope Fire & Rescue Service. This department maintains 2 stations that each hold 2 pieces of fire apparatus. These apparatus include 2 engines, 1 pumper/tanker and 1 CAFS Rescue Engine. The Department is led by a full time Chief and has 25 volunteer members (2 Deputy Chiefs, 3 Captains, 1 Safety Officer, 19 Firefighters, 2 Junior Firefighters).

The department responds to fires within its Fire Protection District and to Motor Vehicle Accidents within the district and the surrounding area. The department also provides public education and participates in demonstrations at different events throughout the year.

A Junior Firefighter program is run in conjunction with the Hudson's Hope School to provide Grade 11 and 12 students with the opportunity to train and work with the Fire & Rescue Department for a year. The department also holds an annual fireworks display on Halloween to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.

R.C.M.P

We have a three-member RCMP detachment and a very low crime rate. Police service for the District of Hudson's Hope is provided by the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police. Presently, the detachment is manned by a Corporal and two Constables. The detachment is located at 10317 Gething Street.

The Chetwynd Court Registry is responsible for the coordination of all criminal,, civil and family court hearings for Hudson's Hope. Court sittings are usually held one day every three months. Supreme Court cases are held in Fort St John.

Emergency Health Services

The BC Ambulance Service operates a station in Hudson's Hope (#862) with 1 Ambulance. This station is led by a Unit Chief and staffed with both Primary Care Paramedics and Emergency Medical Responders who all work part-time/on-call (kilo shift). The ambulance station is co-located with the Health Centre. Serious cases are transferred to the hospitals in Chetwynd or Fort St John.

Municipal Emergency Program

The Municipal Emergency Program is the responsibility of the Manager of Protective & Inspection Services. There is a dedicated group of Emergency Social Services (ESS) volunteers in the community who respond to emergencies where people are displaced. The District maintains a primary and secondary Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate responses during major disasters. There are emergency sirens located throughout the community to signal an evacuation. Contractual Municipal Services

Under contract to the District of Hudson's Hope, the services of a Dog Control Officer and a Special Events Co-ordinator are available as required.

Recycling and Solid Waste Disposal

Garbage Collection
Household garbage is collected weekly.

Collection Site
The transfer site is located on Refuse Site Rd. at the top of the long hill heading to the Bennett Dam. It is open Tuesdays to Sundays from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm, allowing residents to drop off larger items. There is a share shed at this location for items in relatively good shape. Closed on Monday & Tuesday.

Recycling
Recycling bins are located beside the local grocery store. glass, plastic, cardboard, newsprint , other paper, tin cans, aluminum and milk cartons.

Thrift Store
The Friends of Hudson’s Hope operate a second hand store and food bank. They have just opened at a new location in January 2007 at 10322 Gething Street. Monday to Saturday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm. All proceeds go to assist those in need within the community.

Inside facts about Hudson's Hope

During the construction of the WAC Bennett Dam, which took five years, at it’s peak the workers were numbered at 4800.  That’s just the workers.  Could you imagine what the impact was on the town with families counted in as well?

 
The first white explorer through the Hudson's Hope area was Alexander Mackenzie was in 1793 on his journey up the Peace River, which is the only watercourse that completely traverses the Rocky Mountains.
